Event Description

The AOASM Sports Medicine Board Review Course for Initial Certification and Recertification will provide the Sports Medicine Physician with an overview of the important aspects of sports medicine.  Educators in each field will give in-depth, engaging, fast paced, and high yield lectures on board relevant subjects in sports medicine.  Each lecture will be followed by a question and answer session.  Although this course is designed specifically to prepare the Sports Medicine Specialist for the CAQ Sports Medicine Board Exam, it will also provide the practicing physician with an update on the latest knowledge and advances in Sports Medicine.  The course will conclude with a take home written exam with relevant questions and answers that can be used for board preparation.

Course Director(s)

Dr. J Smith is the medical director of sports medicine for Mercy Health in Toledo. His department has over 40 high schools, colleges and semi professional affiliates across Northwest Ohio and Southeastern Michigan.

Dr. Smith was a three-sport scholarship athlete at Gannon University who went on to the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008. He then went on to the Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital for Osteopathic Family Medicine and did his fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he covered all levels of sports from high school to college and professional sports serving as a team physician for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Browns, and Indians.

Dr. Smith currently covers Sylvania Southview High School and St. Francis De Sales School along with the head team physician at Defiance College and Owens Community College along with the associate team physician at Tiffin University and Heidelberg University. He serves as a regional liaison for the US Soccer Federation’s Men’s and Women’s national teams. He is national faculty for the NBOME along with being actively involved with sports medicine research through a partnership with Bowling Green State University.  He has been a member of the AOASM since 2004 serving on currently the board of directors, is the chair of the membership committee, the program director for the AOASM board review course and has been the past national student and resident liaison to the AOASM executive board.

He received his award of Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine in 2017.
