Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) were not intended to be relegated only to a specialty niche, but practiced by all physicians who are willing to learn and apply these principles. Every physician can easily incorporate the philosophy and principles of osteopathic medicine into patient care.

This convocation will showcase physicians from various medical specialties and demonstrate their approach to utilizing osteopathic manipulative medicine and treatment in patient care. 

Dermatology, neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, radiology, sports medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology are just a few of the specialties that will be represented in this year’s presentations and workshops. 

Each physician will discuss how they incorporate the philosophy of OMM into their practice. Workshops will be focused on OMT techniques they incorporate into their busy practices.

Dental Issues Involving OMT and Use of Oral Appliances

Course Description

The workshop will be divided between diagnostic and treatment methods. Diagnosis: A review of observation, auscultation, palpation, and motion testing for clinical findings that can be referred to dentists for problems of airway, tongue function, disordered breathing in both awake and sleep states, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction for infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Treatment: 1: A review of Osteopathic treatments for TMJ disorders, upper cervical complex, and cranial base using Cranial techniques. 2. Evaluating Dental Appliances with Osteopathic Diagnosis and communicating with Dentists about how they are affecting the Cranial Mechanism.

Course Presenter(s)

David N. Grimshaw, DO, began clinical practice in 1988 after training in Family Practice and a Fellowship in OMM in the Dept. of PM & R at MSU-COM. He practiced Family Medicine and Obstetrics with OMM for 7 years, then 2 years of Emergency Medicine in Rural Georgia, after which he has specialized in OMM. Over the past 12 years, he has incorporated a more Integrated Approach using Functional Medicine Principles and Lifestyle Education in addition to OMM and Exercise Prescription. He is Certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, has a Certificate of Competency from the Osteopathic Cranial Academy, and is a Certified Yoga Instructor. He has practiced in Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania in a variety of settings: Rural ERs, Federal Community Health Center, Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation Medicine, OMM Faculty at MSU, and Private Practice. He currently resides and practices in Lansing, Ml, caring for patients of all ages.
